全部拍賣 / Ethnographic / RARE: a lot of 3 Herkimer Diamonds — 8.40 carats...
Exceptional lot of three natural Herkimer Diamonds, bringing together three carefully selected specimens for their bi-terminated morphology, their transparency and, above all, the remarkable diversity of their crystal architectures. Despite a relatively uniform size of about 10 mm, each possesses a totally different identity: the first features an extremely complex internal structure and broad geometric faces; the second reveals a true tangle of growth planes and reflective structures; while the third stands out with a particularly elegant silhouette, almost bipyramidal, paired with beautiful zones of transparency. This diversity gathered in one ensemble allows observation of several expressions of a fascinating crystallization phenomenon. The natural faces strongly catch the light while the interior reveals veils, healed fractures, inclusions and multiple growth planes bearing witness to the individual history of each crystal. The lot reaches 8.40 carats, i.e., an outstanding average weight of 2.80 carats per specimen. These are extremely rare biterminated quartz specimens, known to collectors as “Herkimer Diamonds” due to their brilliance and extraordinary natural geometry. Characteristics - Collection name: Herkimer Diamonds - Number of specimens: 3 - Mineral nature: Natural biterminated quartz - Origin: Pakistan - Total weight: 8.40 carats - Average weight: 2.80 carats per specimen - Dimensions: About 10 mm per specimen - Morphology: Natural bi-terminated crystals - Color: Colorless to slightly smoky depending on areas - Transparency: Transparent to locally translucent - Luster: Intense vitreous - Crystallization: Natural, geometric and highly individualized - Terminations: Natural and well developed - Internal structure: Very complex, different for each of the three specimens - Distinguishing features: Veils, inclusions, natural fractures and growth planes visible - Interest: Mineral collection, crystallography, observation under magnification and macrophotography Three crystals, three expressions of crystallization One of the main appeals of this lot is the remarkable diversity of the three specimens. The first crystal has a wide and very geometric silhouette. Its large transparent faces frame a central part far more complex, composed of a multitude of reflective structures. This contrast between a geometric exterior and a tormented core gives it particularly interesting depth. The central crystal presents an architecture even different. Its interior seems made of successive layers, natural fractures and nested crystal planes. From certain angles, these reflect light simultaneously and produce a multitude of tiny flashes. Finally, the third specimen offers a particularly elegant morphology. Its almost bipyramidal silhouette strikingly highlights the bi-terminated character of the crystal, while its transparent zones allow a deep view into its structure. A geometry entirely created by nature These crystals spectacularly illustrate mineral growth’s capacity to produce forms of astonishing precision. The edges, large flat faces and terminations are not the result of artificial faceting: they correspond to the natural expression of the crystal structure. It is this geometry that gives Herkimer Diamonds their distinctive appearance. Under appropriate lighting, some faces become real mirrors and produce extremely bright flashes. A few degrees of rotation are enough to completely change the appearance of a specimen. Internal landscapes of great complexity The transparency also allows visually access to a second dimension of these crystals: their internal architecture. Through their faces appear networks of veils, reflective planes, natural fractures and various inclusions trapped during formation. These structures sometimes give the impression of observing several crystals inside a single one. Under magnification, details become even more spectacular: some fractures reflect light like tiny mirrors, while perfectly transparent zones allow viewing several millimeters through the material. A geological history preserved in each specimen Each crystal is a true archive of its own growth. Its external shape shows its development in a space permitting termination formation, while its internal structures record different stages and perturbations during crystallization. Inclusions and internal planes are not merely aesthetic elements: they fully participate in the mineralogical identity of each piece. The gathering of three specimens allows direct comparison of three entirely different growth histories. The story of the “Herkimer Diamond” The name “Herkimer Diamond” is historically associated with the famous bi-terminated crystals discovered in Herkimer County and nearby regions of New York State. Their transparency, glassy shine and extraordinary natural geometry earned this comparison to a diamond. They have since become iconic crystals in the world of mineralogical collecting. Comparable bi-terminated crystallizations exist in several regions of the world. The collection name should therefore be distinguished from the geographical provenance of the specimen; the exact origin of this lot is clearly indicated in the characteristics. An especially harmonious ensemble With about 10 mm per specimen, the three crystals are close enough in size to form a visually cohesive set. This homogeneity contrasts with their important morphological and internal differences. The lot thus allows presenting side by side three crystals of similar dimensions while showing how two natural formations are never truly identical. The total weight of 8.40 carats corresponds precisely to an average of 2.80 carats per specimen. Ideal specimens for observation At a glance, the large faces, terminations and transparency are the most immediately visible features. Under magnification, a second reading appears. The internal microstructures become much more distinct, inclusions reveal themselves and certain growth planes previously invisible suddenly produce particularly bright reflections. In macrophotography, each of these three crystals can thus become a true miniature mineral landscape. A remarkable collection lot This lot combines three natural bi-terminated crystals, beautiful transparency, distinct morphologies and remarkable richness of internal structures. The possibility to study three individuals of similar dimensions yet with radically different growth histories greatly enhances the overall interest of the set. With a total of 8.40 carats, exactly 2.80 carats on average per specimen, and a dimension around 10 mm, it constitutes a particularly aesthetic set for lovers of natural crystallizations, mineralogy and pieces with strong individuality. Three specimens, three geometries and three distinct crystal histories gathered in a single exceptional collection lot.
