Precious Vintage Necklace With Diamonds & Rubies in White Gold, 1960s

Luxury can be exuberant, overwhelming with an abundance of shapes and colours like the art of the Baroque. But luxury can also be restrained, elegant and refined - and still have an effect. Just like the necklace here. The necklace sets an impressive, precious abundance of quality diamonds and rubies in white gold. Two rows of brilliant cut diamonds each form the opening, to the left and right of the clasp. They are followed by the first oval faceted rubies, alternating with brilliant cut diamonds. They each lead to an element made entirely of diamonds, designed like another clasp. Two rows of rubies alternating with baguette cut diamonds finally fall softly between them, forming the actual showpiece of the design. The colours of the necklace are reduced to intense red and bright white. Variations are formed solely by the different cuts of the diamonds, between round brilliants and angular baguettes. Nevertheless, the design is not harsh: worn, the necklace seduces with the soft fall of the two rows in front and its delicate, graphic nature. The necklace is a typical, albeit particularly luxurious, piece of the 1960s. After the organic shapes of the fifties, a new desire for geometry returned in the age of the race to the moon. Rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings - the colour of the time was again white, like the stars, combined usually with only one kind of coloured stone in primary colours. In the case of the necklace here, it is rubies from Thailand of very good transparency and colour, which complement the diamonds. The necklace has been preserved in its original case. Unfortunately, it does not bear any hallmarks that would prove its provenance. We discovered it in Düsseldorf.
