Medieval marmite from the classical period in salt-glaze ceramic. Globular-bodied ceramic with a brown-red salt glaze. The broad belly rests on three small stocky feet. Two vertical handles rise from the neck. This stoneware marmite was made in the Rhineland around the 15th century. It is covered with a thin glaze, mainly on the inside to ensure its impermeability. It was only later that the glaze would be used decoratively; on the exterior. Piece in good condition, professionally restored. Germany, Raeren region, early 15th century. Width 20.4 cm - Height 15.9 cm. A rare example of early medieval ceramics made with a salt glaze. Provenance: Netherlands, Galerie D.K.N., From a major Dutch private collection of antique ceramics.
