Planning and Coding of Problems for Electronic Computing Instrument

VON NEUMANN, John (1903-1957) and Herman GOLDSTINE (1913-2004). Planning and Coding of Problems for Electronic Computing Instrument . Report on the Mathematical and Logistical aspects of an Electronic Computing Instrument. Part II, Volume I. Princeton: Institute for Advanced Study, 1947. Erwin Tomash's copy of one of the foundational texts of computer programming. von Neumann and Goldstine's work lays out systematic methods for coding, flowcharting, memory organization, and problem-solving on stored-program computers. Produced as part of the Institute for Advanced Study's Electronic Computer Project, it helped establish many of the practical principles that early programmers used to translate mathematical problems into machine-executable instructions. The work is significant not only as an early programming manual but also as a key document in the development of the “von Neumann architecture” that underlies most modern computers. This work is the second of four papers in the series on the mathematical and logistical aspects of an electronic computing instrument. The present copy had been presented to American engineer and Dataproducts Corporation founder Erwin Tomash by the Charles Babbage Institute in 1990. Small quarto (280 x 220mm). 69 pp. Original paper wrappers printed in black (covers strengthened internally with tape, front cover nearly detached, soiling).
