Pittore Franco-italiano (XIX) - Nudo femminile in interno (L’Ingénue)

FRANCO-ITALIAN PAINTER (XIX) (Active in Europe in the second half of the 19th century) Nude female indoors (L’Ingénue) Oil on panel, 45 x 37 cm Trace of signature not identified at bottom right Frame size approx. 80 x 70 x 8 cm NOTE: Publication catalog of works from the Intermidiart collection (Pdf). Certificate of Legitimate Provenance. Work with contemporaneous wooden frame and gold leaf pastiglia, decorated with acanthus leaf and fluted profiles (defects): We present in the catalog an interesting oil painting on canvas of good quality, depicting an Indoor Nude Female (L’Ingénue), executed by a capable painter active in the second half of the 19th century within the Franco-Italian milieu. The painting features a half-length portrait of a young nude woman, seated on an upholstered chair and turned three-quarters to the viewer. The model, characterized by a dense dark, short hairstyle, looks directly at the observer with an expression that oscillates between innocence and awareness of her own sensuality (hence the traditional French-world title “Ingénue”). With her right hand she holds a white linen drape to her chest that falls softly over the legs, creating a strong color and material contrast with the flesh tones. The figure emerges from a dark, monochrome background, played in warm earth shadow tones and brick red, following a chiaroscuro mode that enhances the body’s plasticity. The light, soft and directional, caresses the girl’s skin, defining volumes with subtle, smooth transitions, free of graphic asperities. The painting technique appears fluid and accurate, with particular skill in rendering tonal transitions of the flesh (the modeling) and the silky sheen of the white fabric, elements typical of the great technical mastery required by late 19th-century exhibition standards. The work fully aligns with the European Late Academicism movement (also known as Art Pompiers in France), a movement that dominated Parisian Salons and international exhibitions in the second half of the nineteenth century. The painting embodies the transition between the formal rigor of history painting and the birth of a more intimate bourgeois taste, focused on the idealized celebration of the human body. The compositional setup and the careful study of anatomy betray solid academic training of the author. However, the softness of the chiaroscuro and the subject choice also reveal the influence of Symbolism and late-century genre painting, where the nude loses its mythological or historical justification to become a pure celebration of grace, mischief, and aesthetics for its own sake. The presence of an unidentified signature trace suggests the work’s attribution to a master operating within the orbit of the great continental art centers (such as Paris, Munich, or Florence). Regarding its state of conservation, the canvas presents generally decent condition consistent with its date of execution. Excellent adhesion of the paint to the support, with no lifting or flaking. There is the physiological and widespread yellowing of the superficial protective varnish (oxidation), which softens tones but guarantees authenticity and the historical patina of the painting. No restorations or evident retouches are noted. The dimensions of the work are 45 x 37 cm. The painting is enhanced by a monumental contemporaneous wooden frame with gilded pastiglia; it is solid. It shows slight and normal aging, with small losses of gilding on the sharp edges and accumulation of historical dust in the recesses of the decorations, which confirm its period (frame measures 80 x 70 x 8 cm, with defects). “The frame shown in the photos above has been added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so that it is ready to display as soon as it arrives. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request order cancellation.” PROVENANCE: Private Collection PUBLICATION: - UNPUBLISHED QUADRERIA, General Catalog of paintings from the Intermidiart Gallery collection of Andrea Maggio, 2026 (pdf). In the case of sale outside the Italian territory, the buyer must wait for the processing times of export procedures.
