The Pioneer PL-55X is a high-quality, direct-drive turntable from the mid-1970s (produced between 1973 and 1976). The model is known for its heavy, robust build quality (weighing 11.3 kg) and its excellent reliability. The "X" designation indicates that this version, compared to the standard PL-55, features upgraded specifications—such as a built-in stroboscope for precise speed control and a high-precision anti-skating mechanism. It is a semi-automatic turntable, meaning that while you must place the tonearm onto the record manually, the arm will automatically return to its rest—and the motor will switch off—once the record has finished playing. Key Specifications Feature Specification Drive System Direct drive (no drive belt) Motor Brushless DC servo motor Speeds 33 ⅓ and 45 RPM (fine-tuning possible via pitch control) Wow & Flutter 0.05% WRMS or less (highly stable rotation) Rumble (Signal-to-noise ratio) 58 dB or greater Turntable Platter 310 mm cast aluminum alloy (weight: 1.4 kg) Tonearm Static-balanced, S-shaped tubular arm Effective Arm Length 221 mm Compatible Cartridge Weight 4 to 14 grams Dimensions (W x H x D) 480 x 185 x 410 mm Features & Listening Characteristics • Build Quality: The chassis features a classic wood-look finish (veneer over heavy composite wood) combined with a robust metal internal structure. Thanks to its heavy construction and specialized damping feet, the turntable is highly resistant to acoustic feedback and external vibrations. • Sound Character: Enthusiasts describe the sound of the PL-55X as highly dynamic, warm, and punchy—particularly in the low-frequency (bass) range. It often delivers a fuller, more forgiving sound when playing older or less-than-perfectly pressed records compared to more modern, lightweight turntables. • Tonearm & Cartridges: The S-shaped tonearm utilizes a standard SME-type (plug-in) headshell, making it very easy to swap out cartridges or styli. Because the tonearm is on the relatively heavy side (medium/high mass), it is historically an excellent match for Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges with medium compliance, or for more robust Moving Coil (MC) cartridges.
