Piet Johannes Cottaar (1878-1950) - Stilleven met Bloemen (No Reserve)

Artist: Petrus Johannes Maria ‘Piet’ Cottaar (Delft 1878–Rotterdam 1950) Title: Still Life with Flowers Medium and support: oil on canvas Dimensions: 37 × 52 cm; with frame 53 × 68 cm Signature: signed lower right ‘Piet Cottaar’ Provenance: From Dutch Art Collection Petrus Johannes Maria ‘Piet’ Cottaar was born in 1878 in Delft and died in 1950 in Rotterdam. He lived and worked most of his life in Rotterdam and was self-taught. Within his oeuvre, still lifes and flower pieces occupy an important place. Object description The still life shows a compact bouquet in a low, blue-green vase, placed on a round wooden table. The flowers are densely packed and fill the central part of the image plane. White, light pink, red and deep red flowers alternate with a closed mass of dark green foliage. A few stems and buds protrude above the main form of the bouquet. The vase is centered on the tabletop and casts a dark shadow forward. The background is kept undifferentiated and shifts in subdued gray-brown, ochre-like and greenish tones. This keeps the saturated red and green parts of the bouquet as the main color accents. The signature ‘Piet Cottaar’ is located lower right, beside the edge of the tabletop. Technique and material analysis The subject is executed in oil on a finely woven canvas. The painting technique varies from relatively thin, smoothly worked passages in the background, table, and vase to a more paste-like treatment of the flowers. Especially in the light petals there are individual brushstrokes and locally raised islets of paint. The veins and folds of leaves and petals are indicated with linear brush accents. The background is broad and thinly painted, with the texture of the canvas readable in places through the paint layer. In the flower piece the paint build-up is denser and more modeled. Minimal craquelure is present. Some retouched areas are scattered. Composition and form analysis The composition is built around a broad triangular mass of flowers and leaves above the low vase. The largest white flower to the left of center and the two prominent red flowers to the right form the main accents. Smaller flowers and buds interrupt the contour of the bouquet, creating an irregular rhythm along the top edge. The round table introduces a horizontal, curved counter-shape beneath the bouquet. The dark shadow of the vase reinforces the placement of the object on the tabletop. Spatial depth arises mainly from the overlapping of flowers and leaves, the modeling with light and shadow, and the shadow areas around the vase and table. The neutral background contains no architectural or perspectival elements. Stylistic and art-historical context The work belongs to the realist tradition of floral still life painting. The individual flowers and leaves are recognizable and plastically modeled, while the composition is organized as a closed bouquet. The combination of a neutral background, a centrally placed container, and a more precisely worked flower piece concentrates the scene on color, form and material texture. The alternation between thinly painted background areas and locally more paste-like petals supports this distinction. Comparable artists Gerardine Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Adriana Johanna Haanen, Margaretha Roosenboom, Henri Fantin-Latour, Emil Nolde Condition The canvas shows limited craquelé. Some local retouches are present. The paint layer otherwise shows the usual minor material traces of aging. The painting is housed in an ornate frame. Conclusion Still Life with Flowers is a realistically executed floral still life by Piet Cottaar (1878–1950), an artist for whom flowers and still lifes are a documented part of his oeuvre. The work is executed in oil on canvas and signed lower right. The paint handling ranges from thin background areas to locally paste-like accents in the bouquet. The condition is characterized by minimal craquelure and some local retouches.
