全部拍賣 / Medals, Arms & Armor / PHILIPPINES. Mindanao. Campaign Bronze Medal, 1895. Alfonso XIII.

PHILIPPINES. Mindanao. Campaign Bronze Medal, 1895. Alfonso XIII. ABOUT UNCIRCULATED Details. Honeycutt-36. Diameter: 33.7 mm. By Castells. Obverse: Conjoined busts of Alfonso XIII and Queen Regent Maria Christina, legend around "CAMPAIGN DE MINDANAO"; Reverse: Date ranges in two lines "1890-1891 / 1894-1895" within wreath. With original ribbon, campaign bar and gilt bronze bezel. This wholesome looking piece displays rich mottled brassy patina with a slight iridescent sheen. Boldly struck with crisp design features, this handsome piece offers a pleasing appearance. Close inspection reveals a slight granularity in the obverse fields purely mentioned for accuracy, but is hardly a distraction. A seldom encountered issue that is sure to catch the attention of many collectors. The decade, prior to the Spanish-American war saw many difficulties for the Spanish Crown. The Moros refused to be subdued and continued to fight against their Spanish colonizers. The Governor-General of the Philippines, Valeriano Weyler (1888-91), was known for his brutality and in 1895 earned the Grand Cross of Maria Christina for his command of troops in the Philippines. He conducted offensives against the Moro people in Mindanao and put down an uprising of "Tagalogs". Estimate: $400 - $600. Provenance: From the Dr. Earl Honeycutt Collection.
