PHILIPPINES. Manila for the Maine Brass Medal, ND (ca. 1900). UNCIRCULATED. Honeycutt-55-12. Dimensions: 40 mm. By Schwaab S & S. Co. Obverse: Bust of Admiral Dewey right, legend around "ADM'RL DEWEY DID IT", all on a six-pointed star within wreath, suspension above with ship and legend "MANILA FOR THE MAINE"; Reverse: Maker's mark in upper right arm of star. A beautifully preserved example with a lovely appearance. Boldly struck with reflective surfaces and intricate designs, this handsome piece offers good eye appeal with much originality. These medals were issued in retribution for the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana, Cuba 15 February 1898. Then Commodore George Dewey received orders to attack the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay.
