Schweizerbart’s Verlagshandlung, 1839 Philippe Le Bas – Sweden and Norway Translated from French into German or edited by Dr. C. A. Mebold. A richly illustrated geographical, historical and cultural-historical country work on Sweden and Norway from the first half of the 19th century. Extent and equipment 678 pages With a total of: 60 steel-engraved plates + 1 engraved, folded map The illustrations are distributed as follows: Sweden – 48 plates Norway – 12 plates The plate and map equipment has been checked and corresponds, with 60 plates and one map, to the bibliographically documented collation. The numerous steel engravings depict landscapes, towns and villages, architecture and historic buildings, costumes, population and characteristic scenes from Sweden and Norway. The views provide at the same time an interesting contemporary look at Scandinavia in the first half of the 19th century. Edition Stuttgart, E. Schweizerbart’s Verlagshandlung, 1839. Historical bibliographical descriptions list this edition as the first German edition. The volume forms Europe IV of the “World-Painting-Gallery,” yet it is also a self-contained country work about Sweden and Norway. Condition Contemporary binding with signs of age and use. The binding shows wear, bumps and edge and spine wear corresponding to an age of about 185 years. The paper is partially browned and foxed due to age. All 60 steel-engraved plates as well as the map are present. The plates were checked by hand. Despite careful examination, a slight deviation in manual specifications cannot be completely ruled out in a comprehensive historical work. Please examine all photographs carefully. The photos are expressly part of the item and condition description and document the actual state and scope of delivery of the offered copy. Provenance The book comes from my private antique collection and was originally purchased through the German book auction trade. The description was prepared to the best of knowledge and belief based on the present copy and bibliographical comparison data. For nearly 190-year-old antique books, age-related signs of wear and storage are part of the conservation state. As far as legally permissible, the private sale is conducted without liability for material defects. This exclusion does not apply to claims based on intentional or grossly negligent breach of duty and in case of injury to life, body or health.
