Phil Freelon (American, 1953-2019), Two Photographs

Each a C-print, matted and framed. Phil Freelon was one of the foremost American architects of his generation, recognized for his contributions to civic and cultural architecture and his thoughtful approach to creating spaces that connect people, history, and community. Based in Durham, North Carolina, he founded The Freelon Group in 1990 and became one of the most prominent North Carolina architects nationally. Among his most significant accomplishments was serving as architect of record for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., alongside other major projects including the National Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta and the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture in Charlotte. In addition to architecture, Freelon was an accomplished photographer who explored the relationships between structure, light, and the natural environment. In 2019-2020, the Cameron Art Museum in Wilmington, North Carolina, presented a solo exhibition of his photographs titled Structure in Space and Time - Photography by Phil Freelon.
