Pferde - Meerschaum pipe - Meerschaum

Rarity! A masterfully hand-crafted large Vienna sepiolite meerschaum pipe including original case! Pipe dimensions: length about 15 cm, width about 3.5 cm, height about 7 cm. In excellent condition - origin before 1912 Austria. Exported to Great Britain. Antique meerschaum pipes from this period were often imported from Austria or Turkey and in England fitted by local silversmiths with high-quality silver rings or caps. These pieces were subsequently sent to Chester for official testing. Polishing in Great Britain by silversmith’s shaft in Chester 1912. • The head material: The artistically carved middle section is made of meerschaum (sepionite). This soft mineral was extremely popular for pipes around 1900 because it is easy to carve and develops a honey- to chestnut-brown patina when smoked due to the nicotine. The darker coloration at the pipe head clearly shows that the piece was used earlier. • The carving: The motif shows a meticulously worked horse motif. (Hunting, nature and animal motifs (especially horses, dogs or stags) were the classic status symbols on meerschaum pipes of this era). • The silver mount: The silver middle section (shank ring) connects the meerschaum head with the mouthpiece. The marks officially certify that this silver mounting was tested and certified in 1912 in Chester (England). The three vertically arranged stamps can now be precisely determined (top to bottom): 1. The town mark (top): The Chester coat of arms (three wheaten ears and a sword). The shield here has the characteristic curved, three-pronged top, used for the era. 2. The year letter (middle): A clear, small ‘m’ in a shield cartouche. In the official stamp table of the Chester Testing Office, exactly this font and shield form stand for the manufacture year 1912. 3. The fineness symbol (bottom): The “Lion Passant” (lion walking) as the statutory guarantee of genuine sterling silver (925 fineness). To the right of the vertical row you can also see remnants of an engraving or maker’s mark in the metal. Since the object dates from 1912, • The mouthpiece: The yellow-mottled tip is made of amber. In summary, you have here a beautiful, over 110-year-old collectible piece of Edwardian tobacco culture, whose age is proven beyond doubt by the British silver hallmarks. Including the original leather case lined with velvet and silk. Please note the many and very detailed photos! Case dimensions: About 18 x 8 x 4 cm. Pipe dimensions: About 15 x 7 x 3 cm Dear buyer!
