De Romana Republica, sive de Re Militari & Civili Romanorum. Leiden (Lugduni Batavorum), Samuel Luchtmans, 1726. Description An attractive and complete copy of this extensively illustrated eighteenth-century work on the political, military, religious and social institutions of ancient Rome. Written by the French Jesuit historian Petrus Josephus Cantel, the work provides a comprehensive account of Roman civilization, including military organization, weapons, triumphal processions, religious ceremonies, public spectacles, architecture, burial customs and everyday life. This sixth edition, published in Leiden in 1726, is particularly appealing for its numerous finely executed copper engravings, including large folding plates. Illustrations The complete series of copper engravings is present, including illustrations depicting: - A detailed plan of ancient Rome. - Roman soldiers, military formations, weapons, shields and standards. - A magnificent Roman triumphal procession. - Religious ceremonies and sacrificial rituals. - Roman theatres, public spectacles and naval entertainments. - Roman funerary customs and elaborate funeral pyres. - Various aspects of Roman civic and domestic life. The binding displays age-related wear, discoloration and some small holes, consistent with its age. The illustrations appear well preserved, with fine engraved detail. The large folding plates are a particularly attractive feature of this copy. An appealing, complete and richly illustrated antiquarian work, approaching three centuries old, of considerable interest to collectors of Roman history, classical antiquity, military history and early illustrated books. In total 1 engraved frontispiece, 1 folding table (explicatio) and 14 plates of which 10 are fold-out engravings.
