His art is characterized by fine lines, vibrant color compositions, and a playful lightness that often reflects musical and poetic structures. Klee was closely connected with Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and August Macke, with whom he helped shape the artists’ group Der Blaue Reiter. His work shows clear influences of Expressionism and Cubism, especially in the use of geometric forms and colorful surfaces, which he deepened in Paris through contact with Robert and Sonia Delaunay. As a teacher at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, Klee worked with artists such as Lyonel Feininger, László Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers. His theories on color and composition had a profound influence on modern art and were developed further by Bauhaus artists like Johannes Itten. Klee also drew inspiration from the art of children and the so-called “primitive art,” linking him with Jean Dubuffet and the Art Brut movement. His work also shows parallels to Surrealism, particularly to Joan Miró and Max Ernst, who likewise explored organic, imaginative visual language. Anyone who loves Paul Klee’s art often also discovers numerous other artists of Classical Modernism, Expressionism, the Bauhaus, and abstract art. With his poetic visual language, his refined sense of color and form, and his extraordinary spirit of experimentation, Paul Klee is among the most important artists of the 20th century. His works continue to fascinate collectors and art lovers with their imagination, symbolic power, and timeless modernity. Particularly closely associated with Paul Klee are Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc, August Macke, Gabriele Münter, Alexej von Jawlensky, Lyonel Feininger, Oskar Schlemmer, Johannes Itten, Josef Albers and László Moholy-Nagy. Together they shaped Expressionism, the Bauhaus, and the development of modern art in a lasting way. Those who appreciate Klees playful handling of color, line, and composition are often also interested in Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, Jean Arp, Kasimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. These artists opened new paths between figuration and abstraction and influenced generations of artists. Lovers of Paul Klee’s imaginative visual worlds also often discover artists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Max Ernst, Jean Dubuffet, Karel Appel, Asger Jorn, Pierre Alechinsky, Sam Francis, Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Victor Vasarely, whose works are likewise characterized by creativity, experimentation, and a distinctive visual language. Moreover, many collectors of Paul Klee are also interested in Gerhard Richter, Cy Twombly, Sean Scully, David Hockney, Anselm Kiefer, Georg Baselitz, Keith Haring, Niki de Saint Phalle, Alexander Calder and Antoni Tàpies. Together these artists demonstrate the remarkable diversity of modern and contemporary art and offer exciting perspectives for all who are captivated by Paul Klee’s poetic visual language, his extraordinary color world, and his lasting influence on art history.
