Paul Georges (Portland, Oregon 1923-2002 Normandy, France), Autumn

Oil on canvas, unsigned, inscribed "Paul Georges" to medial stretcher, unframed. Stretcher size 55 1/2 x 69 in. Purchased from the artist, 1976. Exhibited: Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond, 1980-1981; Best Products Corporate Showroom, 1981-1991. Paul Georges was an American painter born in Portland, Oregon, known for large-scale figurative and allegorical compositions, nudes, and self-portraits. After serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star, Georges continued his artistic education at the University of Oregon. He studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown in 1947 before traveling to Paris, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and studied at Fernand Léger’s atelier from 1949 to 1952. Georges developed a distinctive figurative approach at a time when Abstract Expressionism dominated the American art world, combining expressive handling of paint with an enduring interest in the human figure and narrative imagery. Over the course of his career, he received numerous honors, including the Hallmark Purchase Award in 1960 and a Longview Foundation Fellowship Purchase Award in 1961. Georges spent his later years in France and died in Normandy in 2002. Some light surface grime; minor rubbing to wrapped edges of canvas; lighter "drips" to surface along left edge of canvas, and several "drips" below table.
