Working within the Jirrawun Arts collective from its founding in 1998, Bedford distilled the region's ochre palette and topographic authority into striking compositions. This gouache belongs to a body of works on paper in which Bedford translated the scale and gravity of his canvases into a more intimate, immediate medium, closely associated with the Jirrawun studio's working process during the early to mid-2000s. These gouache works held a dual function, serving as sites of formal experimentation while standing as accomplished objects in their own right, carrying the same authority of line and familiarity with country as Bedford's larger canvases. His imagery draws on cultural authority over specific tracts of East Kimberley country, held and transmitted according to Gija Law, rendered not topographically but as a structure of relationships built from contour, void and repetition. Bedford's contribution to the Kimberley painting movement remains the subject of sustained curatorial and scholarly attention, and his work is held in major public collections across Australia. © Paddy Nyunkuny Bedford / The Estate of Paddy Bedford, 2026
