His work, spanning several stylistic directions, shaped 20th-century art. Already in the Blue Period (1901–1904), Picasso, like Vincent van Gogh, showed how color can be used to create emotional depth. The melancholic blue tones in works such as “The Old Guitarist” recall van Gogh’s expressive handling of color to depict inner suffering and isolation. With the development of Cubism, which Picasso advanced together with Georges Braque, he radically changed the art world. In “Les Demoiselles d'Avignon” (1907) you can see the influence of African art, similar to Amedeo Modigliani, who was also inspired by the simplification and distortion of African sculptures. Picasso and Braque decomposed figures into geometric forms and created new perspectives, which also resonated in the sculpture of Constantin Brâncuși, who experimented with reduced forms in his sculptures. This break with traditional representational methods led to a fundamental re-interpretation of the human figure in art. Picasso’s politically charged works such as “Guernica” (1937), which depicts the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, show parallels to the murals of Diego Rivera, who also addressed social and political injustices. Both artists used their art as a platform to raise awareness of social injustices. While Rivera focused in his monumental murals on the fate of the working class, Picasso in “Guernica” addressed the violence and destruction of war and made a powerful statement against fascism. In his later years Picasso increasingly experimented with surrealist elements, bringing him closer to artists like Joan Miró and Salvador Dalí. Although he was never officially part of the Surrealists, his dreamlike depictions, especially the distortion of shapes and figures, show clear parallels to surrealist themes of dream and the subconscious. Picasso, however, always fused these surrealist influences with his unmistakable style, characterized by continual renewal and creative experimentation.
