The high-quality print underlines the graphic quality of the motif and gives the work a clear, striking presence. Picasso's short animal representations are among the most charming examples of his playful drawing. With a few, precise lines, the artist manages to capture movement, character, and expression in an impressive way. Although Picasso drew horses throughout his career—from his early pink period around 1906 to studies for Guernica in 1937—this particular minimalist work belongs to a series of famous line drawings of animals that he made in the 1950s. In this period he experimented extensively with capturing the essence of a subject with only a single, uninterrupted line. This representation convinces with its reduced, expressive line work and a direct, vivid visual impact. Precisely the animal drawings from this phase possess their own character and clearly distinguish themselves from later, heavily abstracted works.
