P. Chanin - Bruce, ou le Don Quichotte de l’amitié - 1801

First edition (French translation). Three volumes (complete text). This is a French translation of 'The Amicable Quixote; or, the Enthusiasm of Friendship'. The English original was published in four volumes by J. Walker of London, 1788. This edition, in three volumes has a leather spine, with gilt decoration. There is some loss to the head of volume two and nicking to the bottom edge. Marbled boards with some rubbing to them. Half titles, with printer details to the verso. Followed by title. Slight edgewear with small closed tears to the titles and half titles of volume I & II. Binding is slightly shaken, but holding. Pages are mostly clean, with a touch of foxing / marking to them. But overall, in decent, clean condition. Each title page has the ownership signature "Rosely" to the top edge. A sentimental, comic novel about a well-meaning but impractical hero whose excessive devotion to friendship leads him into Quixotic adventures and misadventures. “Don Quixote of friendship” does not mean it is by Cervantes; it means the hero resembles Don Quixote in his idealism and lack of worldly judgement. (iv), 9-282., [iv], 5-294., [iv], 5-275. pp. 17 x 10 cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 1388629075. This states only library holding at Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. (Munich). This copy has a frontis engraving to volume one - our copy does NOT have this. No copies for sale at the time of cataloguing. CAT19 records three plates after Binet, engraved by Bovinet; all lacking here. English writers loved the Quixote formula, an enthusiast who sees the world through one obsession: Here, the obsession is with friendship - so he is the knight errant of friendship. It is very rare. CAT19, the Oxford–Brussels database of French novels 1801–1830, records only one location, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich The name Bruce, is the translator re-naming the work after its hero. PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE AWAY AT A BOOKFAIR FROM THE 28TH OCTOBER UNTIL THE 11TH NOVEMBER - SO WE PROBABLY CANNOT SHIP UNTIL OUR RETURN. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE.
