Oshin - Wood - Sato Suigai - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

Here is a superb set of three creative Kokeshi dolls. The first is an artisanal piece of the Omiyage (art souvenir) type, probably dating from the Shōwa period (mid-20th century). It represents a character in a traditional kimono (geisha/maiko style) on a turned varnished wood background, accompanied by fine Japanese calligraphy. Signed with brush and black ink by the artisan Imai Mitsuru / Michi on the lower part of the body. Presence of the traditional red stamp (Hanko) of the Imai family under the base. Dimensions: H 22 x D 6.5 cm The second is a sought-after collection piece, made by the famous craftsman Sato Suigai, a master recognized in his art and laureate of the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize in Japan. Its official title is “Oshin”. It was created in homage to the main character of the famous Japanese television drama series of the same name from the 1980s, which tells the life of a brave girl through the hardships of the Meiji era up to the Shōwa era. It is recognizable by its plump body, its large red collar painted on an orange background, and the flowing calligraphy painted in black ink on her kimono. The artist, Sato Suigai (1920–), was a renowned Japanese painter who converted to the art of creative Kokeshi, awarded notably the prestigious Prime Minister’s Prize in Japan. Dimensions: H 15 x D 9.5 cm The third is a magnificent vintage creative Japanese Kokeshi doll in wood turned and hand-painted. This is an authentic work by the renowned artist Kunio Miyagawa. It stands out for its minimalist design, its delicately carved closed eyes, its neat hairstyle adorned with a pretty red bow, and its body decorated with delicate white flower motifs.
