Old Rice God - 58.5 cm - Bulul - Ifugao - Philippines (No reserve price)

Old Bulul (Rice God) from the Ifugao, Luzon, Philippines, dating from the mid-20th century. This Bulul, originating from the Ifugao people on Luzon in the Philippines, is an important ritual object that lies at the center of Ifugao religion. Their belief is a complex mix of animism, ancestor worship, and magic, with fate being entirely determined by the will of their gods. To please these gods, rituals are performed at all major moments in the Ifugao life, such as illness, marriage, or harvest. A priest, known as a mombaki, then performs specific rituals to bring about prosperity. The Bulul plays a crucial role in rituals carried out by the mombaki. The statue is imbued with spiritual energy, giving it the power to ensure a good rice harvest. It thus serves as both a fertility and protective image. This specimen is clearly a male figure. It has the characteristic simple, serene face, which is typical of a Bulul. It is sturdy and in good condition. Carefully packed and shipped with track and trace.
