SEA EYES WITHOUT A HORIZON Artist: NUSH Menna Title: Yeux de mer sans horizon Year: 2026 Technique: oil on canvas Dimensions: 30 × 40 cm Original unique work Certificate of authenticity: yes, signed by the artist Protective final varnish ” belongs to NUSH Menna's painterly research devoted to the contemporary face. The portrait nearly fills the entire canvas. The close crop eliminates any superfluous narrative element and concentrates the view on the face, especially the eyes: green, threaded with turquoise and aquatic variations, emerging from the dark mass of hair and the warmth of the complexion. From here the title, “Yeux de mer sans horizon” — Ocean eyes without a horizon. A sea enclosed in the gaze, with no line to indicate where it ends. The painting proceeds through a precise, layered oil technique. Thin glazes gradually build the complexion, the transparencies, and the color variations of the skin; very fine brushes are used in the details of the eyes, lashes, freckles, and hair. Some areas retain a more evident painterly material, allowing the physical presence of the canvas and the gesture to be felt. The contrast between the dark hair, the reds and pinks of the face, and the almost marine brightness of the eyes defines the visual center of the work. CRITICAL NOTE In NUSH Menna’s research, the portrait does not simply reproduce a physiognomy. Her faces belong to the present, yet possess something archetypal: figures without a declared biography, suspended between individual and image. In “Yeux de mer sans horizon” this tension is entrusted primarily to the gaze. The frontal presentation recalls the tradition of portraiture, while the makeup, the close photographic cut, and the chromatic intensity belong to contemporary visual culture. The hyperrealist precision coexists with a painted surface that remains visible: up close, glazing, small color passages, and brush traces appear. The face thus seems familiar without belonging to anyone we can truly know. The eyes look beyond the canvas, yet hold something. It is in that distance that the title finds its space: a sea whose surface we see without being able to find the horizon.
