NÖRGAARD (Erik). — When Men Dreamed of Love. Paris, Éric Losfeld, [circa 1970]. Translated from Danish by Raymond Albeck. Quarto, publisher’s white cloth binding, red title on the spine and a small red erotic motif on the front cover. A comprehensive, richly illustrated study devoted to the history of eroticism, its representations, and popular imagery, from the 19th century through the early decades of the 20th century. The book brings together a wealth of iconographic material: engravings, caricatures, drawings, old photographs, postcards, advertisements, and popular illustrations. Several chapters are devoted to clothing and accessories associated with the erotic imagination—corsets, shoes, and boots—as well as to the circulation of clandestine literature and images. It features numerous black-and-white and color reproductions, some of which are full-page. The frontispiece reproduces in color a vignette by Reunier for Édouard Fuchs’s book, *La Femme dans la caricature*. French edition published by Éric Losfeld, a publisher closely associated with the avant-garde, counterculture, and erotic publishing of the 1960s and 1970s. A good copy, missing the dust jacket. The white cardboard cover is slightly soiled and yellowed in places, with minor signs of wear; the interior is clean.
