Offered from a private collection: an exceptionally large and heavy 19th-century silver tea caddy in the shape of a Dutch showcases cabinet, crowned with a weasel head. This is the monumental model of 14.5 cm high and no less than 188.00 grams, which is very rarely offered. The caddy is fashioned as a cabinet on four twisted baluster feet with volutes and ball knobs at the corners. The whole, on ALL sides, including the bottom drawer and the upper structure, is hand-engraved and chased with deep Rococo-style cartouches. Subjects with hunting and pastoral scenes: hunters with guns, riders on horseback, musicians, peasant couples, children and putti in landscapes. The upper edge is decorated with Rocaille volutes and floral motifs. The tea caddy consists of one large compartment. The upper part, in the form of a small house with a cast weasel head (stone weasel) on top, serves as a completely detachable cap/ lid. The lid fits snugly and is complete with the little head as a knop. Germany, Hanau, ca. 1890-1910 Made in one of the major Hanau ateliers such as B. Neresheimer & Söhne, in the wake of 18th-century Dutch silver. Equipped with 4 stamped Hanau pseudo-asses at the bottom (see photo) – imitation of Dutch city and master marks with fineness mark for 800/833 silver. Typical and correct for Hanau silver from this period. These marks were stamped by the silversmith to make the Teacaddy appear as if made in the 18th century and thus more valuable. Specifications: • Height: 14.5 cm including the head • Weight: 188 grams • Material: Silver 800/833 • Number of compartments: 1 with detachable cap • Decoration: Finely chased all around, on all sides. Condition: In very good antique condition. No dents, cracks or repairs. No silver loss, solid silver. Lid fits perfectly and snugly, no play. An absolute showpiece for the collector of Hanau silver, silver miniatures, tea caddies and Judaica. Because of its large size, the high weight of 188 grams and the complete detachable cap with the head, this ranks among the most impressive specimens. This stunning rare 19th-century silver Tea Caddy, due to its size, its elegant form, the detailed refined workmanship and the beautiful decoration, is a striking and particularly decorative object. The cap fits perfectly, so it is also nice and very suitable to use. Well packed and insured for shipment.
