Curated collection of antique, vintage and modern rugs No Reserve - Antique Caucasian Soumak Horse Cover, late 19th century Size: 5 ft 8 in x 3 ft 3 in (1.72 m x 0.99 m) Provenance: Property of a California collector A collectible Caucasian horse cover woven in the Soumak technique, which creates crisp tapestry-like designs through colored wefts wrapped around the foundation. Horse covers were functional prestige textiles that protected and decorated an animal while signaling the identity, prosperity, or status of its owner. Their specialized purpose and distinctive shaping make surviving examples especially interesting to collectors of Caucasian tribal weaving.
