Netherlands, Zeeland Wapenstuiver 1738/37 (No reserve price)

Zeeland – Double Wapenstuiver 1738/37 – Middelburg | Very rare year-date correction Northern Netherlands – Republic of the Seven United Netherlands (1581–1795) A particularly rare and very unusual silver specimen of the double wapenstuiver from 1738/37, minted in Middelburg for the province of Zeeland under Mintmaster Pieter Kappeyne, recognizable by the fortress as the mintmark. This coin is distinguished by a remarkable and clearly visible year-date correction from 1737 to 1738. In this process the original year was altered on the die for the new issue. A fascinating detail that provides a unique glimpse into the workings of eighteenth-century coin production. The coin features an attractive dark silver-gray patina, with the higher relief areas beautifully contrasting with the background. The crowned Zeeland provincial coat of arms with the lion rising from the waves is particularly striking. Obverse: The inscription ZEELANDIA, divided over three lines, with the year 1738/37 beneath. Above the fortress as mintmark, flanked by decorative motifs. Reverse: The crowned provincial coat of arms of Zeeland with the lion climbing up from the waves, flanked by the split denomination 2 – S (2 stuivers).
