Netherlands, Holland Scheepjesschelling 1727 R

Ship's Shilling 1727 – Holland Republic of the United Netherlands · Dordrecht · 6 Stuivers An exceptionally attractive silver ship's shilling from 1727, struck at Dordrecht for Holland and West Friesland. Very rare in this high and particularly appealing quality, with a powerful presence and a beautifully preserved coin portrait. The combination of the crowned Dutch coat of arms and the characteristic three-masted ship makes the ship's shilling one of the most recognizable maritime coin types of the Republic. Obverse Central the crowned coat of arms of Holland, with the year 1727. Inscription: MO · NO · ORD · HOLL · ET · WESTFRI Moneta Nova Ordinum Hollandiae et Westfrisiae “New coin of the States of Holland and West-Friesland.” Reverse A three-masted ship under sail, sailing to the right. Inscription: VIGILATE DEO CONFIDENTES “Watch, trusting in God.” The imposing ship representation gave this beloved coin type its name: the ship's shilling. Specifications Province: Holland and West Friesland Mint: Dordrecht Year: 1727 Nominal value: 6 stuivers · 1 shilling Type: Ship's shilling Metal: Silver Fineness: 583/1000 Diameter: approx. 27 mm Edge: Plain Rarity Very rare in this high, attractive quality. Exactly the combination of the early date, the distinctive maritime design and the exceptional preservation makes this an example that stands out. Historical context The ship's shilling forms a striking symbol of eighteenth-century Holland. The provincial arms represent the authority of the States, while the three-masted ship refers to the seafaring and trade that were so decisive for Holland's position within the Republic. An exclusive ship's shilling from 1727, with a strong historical presence and in a quality in which this type is rarely offered.
