Provenance information: Object Registration ID: 860 The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the axe from H.T. in Emmen. The previous owner, H.T. from Emmen (The Netherlands), stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990s. According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in The Netherlands since the 1990s. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This large flint axe is attributed to the Neolithic Funnelbeaker Culture (Trichterbecherkultur, abbreviated TRB), dating to approximately 3400–2800 B.C. The Funnelbeaker Culture was one of the earliest farming societies of northwestern Europe, flourishing across present-day Denmark, northern Germany, the Netherlands, and southern Scandinavia. It is named after its distinctive funnel-shaped pottery and is also renowned for the construction of impressive megalithic monuments, including dolmens and passage graves. Flint axes of this type were indispensable tools used for clearing forests, felling trees, woodworking, and constructing houses, fences, and other structures required by settled agricultural communities. Their production demanded considerable expertise, as skilled flint knappers carefully selected suitable raw material and shaped it through controlled percussion flaking into robust and efficient tools. Larger examples such as this may also have served as symbols of status and prestige within Neolithic society. The Funnelbeaker Culture played a pivotal role in the spread of agriculture across northwestern Europe.
