It was renowned for electrum staters, or Kyzikenoi, used widely in eastern Mediterranean trade. Allied at various times with Persia, Athens, and Alexander the Great, it was the site of Athens’ victory over Sparta in 410 BC. Under Rome it remained prosperous before declining through disasters and shifting trade routes.
