Offered here is a well-circulated Obsolete issued by the Bank of Monroe during Michigan's Territorial period. Yet this note is more than just another well-circulated Obsolete from Michigan. Looking right, the astute bidder may observe the penned signature of Oliver Cowdery who was an important personality in the early days of the LDS Movement during the 1830s before his disagreements with Joseph Smith prompted his excommunication in 1838. Now Cowdery's work in Michigan offers a fine counterpoint to the activities of the Kirtland Safety Society in neighboring Ohio for which he had previously negotiated a contract with Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty in Philadelphia to provide for printing plates and sheets of notes for the Kirtland Safety Society Bank. The Bank of Monroe ultimately proved short-lived however as the prevailing economic pressures of the period claimed the Bank of Monroe in 1838 hardly a year after the LDS movement took control of the bank under Cowdery's supervision making this lot an important piece of LDS history from long before the Saints ultimately relocated to Utah after a years-long continental trek.
