Monastero di Bačkovo

Monastero di Bačkovo

Madonna with Child: wooden sculpture and Orthodox icon signed Venka Arnaudova, Bulgaria and Eastern Europe, 20th century Religious lot consisting of two depictions of the Madonna with Child Jesus: a full-round wooden sculpture and a painted icon on panel, signed Venka Arnaudova and accompanied by a label declaring its connection to the Bačkovo Monastery in Bulgaria. The icon depicts the Mother of God with the Child in a gathered, affectionate composition, with faces close together. This iconographic pattern recalls the tradition of the Virgin of Tenderness (Eleousa), one of the most significant Marian representations in Orthodox sacred art. The reference to Bačkovo is particularly interesting. The Bulgarian monastery houses a famous miraculous ikon of the Virgin, venerated for centuries and traditionally associated with the Tenderness type and the designation Vlacherna (Vlaherniotisa). The label on the back of the piece for sale describes it as an artisanal reproduction of a medieval icon, made according to an ancient technique. According to the stated provenance, it was purchased at the monastery in 1980. The icon is signed Venka Arnaudova and features gilded halos and relief ornamental motifs, created with a molded paste that was subsequently colored. The decoration gives the surface a rich, ornamental character in line with the tradition of devotional images intended for prayer and contemplation. Completing the lot is a Madonna with Child carved in wood, characterized by a slender figure, a crown, and the folds of the mantle deeply incised. The brown surface shows lightening and signs of wear on the most exposed parts, which enhance the volumes and the handmade workmanship. The sculpture is carved from a single piece of wood and recalls the essential language of popular European devotional sculpture from the twentieth century. The two works offer a comparison between the plastic force of relief and the symbolic and pictorial dimension of the icon. The juxtaposition of the two works provides an interesting comparison between the three-dimensionality of wood carving and the pictorial and symbolic dimension of Orthodox iconography. Both belong to the world of Marian devotion and attest to the spread of sacred images intended for prayer and domestic contemplation. A lot suitable for collectors of folk sacred art, wooden sculpture, Orthodox icons, and religious artifacts from Eastern Europe. Technical sheet 1.
