Description of the lot for catalog Description of the work: Solemn oil-on-canvas portrait of strict academic-realist roots, representative of intercentury portrait painting. The composition, half-length against a dark neutral background, presents a distinguished gentleman with a penetrating yet serene gaze, dark hair, mustache and neatly groomed beard, wearing a dark frock coat or jacket and a stiff white collar with starch. His features bear a close and notable resemblance to the artist’s own likenesses and self-portraits known for the Galician-Brazilian painter Modesto Brocos. The work stands out for its sober chromatic economy and the mastery of facial modeling. The brushwork, secure and direct, solidly builds the facial volumes, focusing on the psychological capture of the subject and the play of light and shadow typical of the great European school. The canvas is mounted on its original wooden frame with adjusting wedges and framed in an elegant period gold frame. It presents a noble patina, natural craquelure, and normal signs of aging commensurate with its age. About the author: Modesto Brocos y Gómez (1852-1936) Modesto Brocos y Gómez was born in Santiago de Compostela in 1852 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1936. He is one of the most relevant bridging figures of academic and realist painting between Spain and Brazil in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He began his artistic studies in A Coruña and at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, completing a rigorous international training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and in the Académie de France in Rome. Later settled in Brazil, he was a drawing professor at the prestigious Escola Nacional de Bellas Artes in Rio de Janeiro, where he had a decisive influence on generations of artists. A painter of impeccable technique, engraver and theorist, he mastered psychological portraiture, the nude, landscape and history and genre painting, being the author of Brazilian masterworks such as A Redenção de Cam (1895, National Museum of Fine Arts of Rio de Janeiro). His works are part of institutional and museum collections in both Spain and the Americas, and enjoy high valuation and esteem in the international auction market.
