The Thinker (Le Penseur) is a bronze sculpture by the French sculptor Auguste Rodin. It represents the creative mind at work. The sculpture is often associated with philosophy due to the man’s pose, absorbed in deep thought. Rodin created this famous work in 1881. It was in that year that Rodin received his first official Paris commission: a monumental bronze gate for a future museum of Decorative Arts. This Porte de l’Enfer (Gate of Hell) was conceived after Dante’s Divine Comedy. The bronze sculpture was intended for the central pediment, while the emphasized musculature and the concentrated expression of the sculpture evoked the figure studies of Michelangelo in the Florentine Basilica of Saint Lawrence. The Thinker is also known as Le Poète, because it was intended to depict Dante in meditation. The Thinker was Rodin’s first work to be displayed in a public place. On 21 April 1906 it was installed in the Pantheon during a severe political and social crisis, turning the sculpture into a socialist symbol. In 1922 the sculpture with its pedestal was moved to the garden of Hôtel Biron, the present Rodin Museum. Another example is in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen. Other copies stand by Rodin’s tomb in Meudon and at the main entrance of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
