A Pappenheimer style rapier, or transitional cup-hilt rapier. The hilt features characteristic sweeping bars enclosing broad, pierced decorative plates or shells. The stiff, strongly tapering blade is of diamond or rhomboidal cross section. The wooden grip is wrapped in double-strand iron or steel wire and finished with braided wire Turk’s head bands at the upper and lower ends. The pommel retains a visible peen block where the blade tang passes through and has been hammered over. Dimensions: blade measures approx. 31" in length and the overall length is 37.75" in length. Condition: The sword exhibits considerable age-related surface oxidation, including deep pitting and a dark, seemingly stabilized patina. The blade edges display numerous chips, notches, and areas of pitting consistent with extensive age and wear. The precise age and originality of the individual components cannot be definitively established . As with many antique swords, the possibility of later alterations, replacement components, or a composite hilt and blade should be considered.
