Middle East – Medieval Islamic carved steatite oil lamp with elongated wick channel – ca. 9th–12th century AD Description Middle East Medieval Islamic period, circa 9th–12th century AD A substantial oil lamp carved from a single block of dark stone, probably steatite (soapstone/chlorite). The lamp presents a strongly sculptural and functional form, consisting of a deep rounded open reservoir connected directly to a remarkably long, projecting open wick channel or nozzle. At the opposite end is a short, solid rectangular grip, allowing the lamp to be handled. The entire object has been carefully hollowed and shaped from a single block of stone. Its massive rounded reservoir contrasts with the elongated tapering nozzle, producing the characteristic boat-like profile visible from the side. The surface displays extensive wear and alteration consistent with prolonged use and age, including areas of smoothing, encrustation, mineral deposits and darker surface coloration. The interior of the reservoir and wick channel also preserve extensive traces of use. Carved steatite was particularly suitable for utilitarian vessels exposed to heat because of its workability and thermal properties. Archaeological excavations demonstrate a well-established tradition of stone oil lamps throughout the medieval Islamic Near East. Steatite lamps excavated at Ayla (Aqaba) are securely dated by archaeological context to the 8th century AD / Umayyad period. These examples have been associated with stone sources in Yemen or western Arabia. A substantial corpus of carved steatite lamps was also recovered during the excavations at Nishapur, with examples in the Metropolitan Museum of Art dated to the 9th century, 9th–10th century, and more broadly 9th–11th century AD. The Metropolitan Museum of Art The present lamp differs in form from these published examples and therefore cannot be assigned to a specific production centre solely on typological grounds. Nevertheless, its material, construction and functional morphology are consistent with the wider medieval Islamic tradition of carved stone lighting vessels. On this basis, a Middle Eastern origin and an approximate 9th–12th century AD date are proposed. Material: dark stone, probably steatite / soapstone (chlorite) Technique: carved and hollowed from a single block Length: approx. 18 cm External diameter of reservoir: approx. 88 mm Weight: 616 g Condition: Good overall condition considering age and utilitarian function. Surface wear, scratches, deposits, encrustations and local erosion are present. The rim and elongated wick channel show extensive wear. No restoration is apparent from visual examination. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the complete condition.
