The pilgrim's shell is one of the most important symbols or distinguishing marks that identify a pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago. With the surge of pilgrimages to Santiago, the use of the shell dates back to the medieval pilgrimages to the Cathedral of Santiago. It was a distinguishing element carried by pilgrims who returned home after visiting the Apostle's tomb and that set them apart from those who had not yet reached it. The shell appears cited as a Jacobean symbol in the Codex Calixtinus, of the 12th century.
