全部拍賣 / Porcelain & Pottery / Maya Copador Pottery Jar - Twin Handles & Geometric Bands

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Maya. A round-bodied ceramic jar rising to a flaring collar, its buff surface enlivened with russet slip painted in disciplined registers. Two small loop handles flank the shoulder, functional lugs for suspension or handling. The neck carries stacked bands of stylized ornament: a frieze of scrolling pseudo-glyphic motifs above, a lower zone of hatched triangles and stepped fret patterns, all bounded by broad horizontal lines. Below the shoulder the belly is left largely plain, punctuated by a circular reserved medallion. The bichrome palette, cream ground against iron-red decoration, and the abstracted, calligraphic banding identify this as Copador ware, a distinctive polychrome tradition of the southeastern Maya periphery. Such vessels served domestic and mortuary purposes, prized as trade goods across a wide exchange network in the Late Classic period. Copador ceramics (the name derives from "Copan" plus "Salvador") were produced chiefly in the region around Copan, Honduras, and the Rio Amarillo and Salvadoran highlands between roughly 600 and 900 CE. Their painted "pseudo-glyphs," rows of sign-like marks that imitate Maya writing without spelling legible text, are a hallmark of the type, suggesting the potters emulated the prestige of literate elite ceramics without transcribing actual language. Distributed widely through Late Classic trade, Copador vessels are among the most recognizable diagnostic wares of the southeastern Maya zone. Item # 203734
