Maurice Hardyns (1876–1954), “Grand Homard – Pronkstilleven avec Argenterie” XL-oil on canvas, signed, image dimensions about 80 × 97 cm, frame dimensions about 101 × 119 cm Exceptionally striking large still life oil painting by Maurice Hardyns, a Belgian academic painter whose work is institutionally documented. His painting Intérieur belge is in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims in France, which significantly elevates the artist’s status and the market value of his works. Historical paragraph In 1946, Hardyns’s work was chosen for a prestigious donation from the Belgian side to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims in France. In the postwar period, as relations and cultural identity were being rebuilt, objects of the highest artistic quality were transferred to represent national craftsmanship on the international stage. The decision to choose Hardyns’s work for a state gift indicates that the artist was at the peak of his career and regarded as one of the most important Belgian painters of his era. What is particularly relevant to this offer is that the painting offered for sale has almost identical dimensions, subject matter, and quality of execution as the museum piece Intérieur belge in Reims. This places the offered work directly alongside museum-status creations and makes it a unique collector’s opportunity. The official museum card for Hardyns’s work is available here: https://musees-reims.fr/oeuvre/interieur-belge The presented work, titled “Grand Homard – Pronkstilleven avec Argenterie,” presents an imposing pronkstilleven composition, a rich still life of opulence inspired by seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. In the center is a monumental red lobster surrounded by silverware, glass, copper, fruit, and lemons. The artist handles light and reflections of metals with masterful precision, achieving a remarkable sense of depth, shine, and realism. The painting was executed in oil on canvas and signed in the artist’s original, characteristic way with the inscription MHardyns in the lower right corner. The format of the work is close to the size of Hardyns’s museum piece from Reims, suggesting it was produced in a particularly representative and mature period of his career. Hardyns’s works appear on the market very rarely, especially in such a large, complex, and elegant form. The offered painting represents the highest class of Belgian academic realism from the first half of the 20th century. It is preserved in good condition, in a decorative frame. In the postwar period, only representative works deemed most important in the artist’s oeuvre and most valuable for presenting national culture abroad were chosen for such gifts. This fact confirms Hardyns’s high standing as early as the 1940s. With regard to the presented painting, the nearly identical format, related subject matter, and similar quality of execution allow one to suppose that the work could have been created in the same period of the artist’s peak activity. This, in turn, significantly enhances its investment and collecting appeal. For a buyer, this means obtaining a museum-quality work whose provenance and historical context increase its uniqueness and prestige. EXPERT NOTE The presented work by Maurice Hardyns is an excellent example of the highest-class Belgian academic painting of the first half of the 20th century. The artist, active during a period of intense development of realist painting in Belgium, was known for exceptional talent in manipulating light, texture, and detail. His oeuvre is institutionally confirmed, with one of the strongest attestations being the presence of Intérieur belge in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims, one of the premier museums in France. It is particularly significant that this Hardyns work was formally donated to Reims in 1946 as part of the postwar Belgian art donation (Section Belge de l’Idée Française à l’Étranger). This was a period when states carefully selected objects to be handed to international partners, choosing only works considered representative, of exceptional artistic and symbolic value. The decision to include Hardyns’s work in such a prestigious selection clearly indicates his position in the art world—he was regarded as one of the leading representatives of Belgian academism, and his paintings were treated as particularly valuable examples of native painting. The offered work Grand Homard – Pronkstilleven avec Argenterie shows striking similarity to the museum piece not only in style and quality but also in format, which is almost identical (about 80 × 97 cm as with the Reims painting). This coincidence may suggest that the painting originates from the same period of Hardyns’s peak activity, when he produced his most representative compositions. Large canvases were costly, created for display in salons, residences, or representative spaces, and their creation was usually tied to higher commissions and prestige. The pronkstilleven composition, which Hardyns developed with exceptional attention to detail, draws on the Flemish XVIIth-century tradition—the era that gave Europe some of the most magnificent still life depictions. The monumental red lobster, the glossy silver, metal reflections, the transparency of glass, softly modeled fruits, and the lemon with a peeled rind—all these elements indicate a conscious reference to the highest standards of old Flemish painting. Hardyns, however, interprets them in the spirit of XXth-century academicism, combining historical stylization with modern precision and a more subtle approach to light. It is worth noting that Hardyns’s works appear on the market infrequently, and large formats with such rich composition are among the rarest and most sought after by collectors. The painting combines three key features that significantly raise its investment value: outstanding painterly quality, a strong link to museum-confirmed work, and rarity of occurrence. The context of the donation to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims is particularly important. It signifies that Hardyns’s work was already considered worthy of representing Belgian national art on the international stage in the 1940s. This, in turn, makes the offered painting—with its close connection to the museum piece—an artwork with museum-like properties, ideally suited for a private, institutional, or representative collection. For the collector, this is an opportunity to acquire a work of exceptional significance, not only aesthetically but also historically. The combination of a classic Flemish pronkstilleven, high-quality academic realism, the artist’s museum-confirmed status, and direct ties to a state donation creates a unique set of features rarely seen on the market. The painting is preserved in good condition, in a decorative frame that harmoniously complements the composition. This work will surely meet a collector’s expectations for a museum-class piece. Warm regards :-))
