Matthäus Merian il Vecchio (1593-1650) - Joseph Plepp...

Il Col de Pierre Pertuis is a historic Alpine pass located at 827 meters above sea level in the Jura Massif, within the Bernese Jura in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. It connects the towns of Sonceboz-Sombeval and Tavannes. The pass owes its great international fame to the combination of a spectacular geological formation and an ancient Roman engineering heritage. The name derives directly from the Latin expression Petra pertusa, literally meaning "perforated rock" or "cracked rock". Type: Copperplate engraving (etching, finished with burin); Support: Wove paper with fillets. State: Excellent inking in black and white. Good conservation state, with slight traces of foxing and browning. The paper shows a light and natural browning due to time and a water stain in the lower left corner. The print has minimal margins. All as per photographs. Shipping: INSURED Bartolini/DPD courier, declare any damages at pickup; Provenance: Provenance from private collection; Matthäus Merian the Elder (Basel, 22 September 1593 – Bad Schwalbach, 19 June 1650) was one of the most famous engravers, designers and cartographers of Switzerland in the 17th century. His fame is mainly linked to the production of maps and city views of extraordinary precision, making him a key figure for geographical and historical documentation of Baroque Europe. Joseph Plepp (Bern, 3 October 1595 – Bern, May 1642) was a Swiss painter, architect, magistrate and cartographer.
