Bigg, successor to D. Leach. And sold by B. White, in Fleet-Street; L. Davis, in Holborne; J. Nourse, in the Strand; and T. Payne, near the Mews-Gate, 1772. *** Rare at auction. It is a key work in 18th-century English geometrical reconstruction. Apollonius’s lost treatise 'De determinata sectione' survived only through descriptions in Pappus of Alexandria’s 'Collection'. Willebrord Snellius first published his Latin restoration ('Apollonius Batavus') in 1608. John Lawson later translated Snell's work into English and appended an independent restoration by William Wales, the mathematician and astronomer who served on Captain James Cook’s second voyage aboard HMS Resolution (1772–1775).
