Marten Toonder Studio's - Tom Poes en Heer Bommel...

The animated film by De Bommel, "If you understand what I mean" from 1983 was the first and remains almost the only fully-fledged Dutch-produced feature-length cartoon for young and old. The main character is Olivier ‘Ollie’ B. Bommel, the popular creation of comic author Marten Toonder. The Dutch language was enriched by the Bommel stories with words like ‘denkraam’ and ‘minkukel’ and with expressions such as ‘kommer en kwel’ and ‘If you understand what I mean’. The latter is Olivier B. Bommel’s oft-quoted catchphrase and thus a natural title for the animated film. It had long been Toonder’s dream to bring the urbane bear of standing, who always wears a yellow jacket with a red checked pattern, to life on screen. He even called cartoons “the pinnacle of the comic strip.” Almost three years of work went into it before the film premiered on February 2, 1983 in the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam. On IMDb the film still carries a rating of 7.4/10. It was, of course, important that in the first ever full-length animated film (made in the Netherlands) the right colors appeared on the screen. For this reason Marten Toonder Studio’s at the time produced high-quality scans ("film slides") of several scenes to search for the correct colors. Forty years ago digital work did not yet exist, so determining and judging the correct color was done via such a "film slide". It was time-consuming and costly but, of course, very important. For the reasons above, a very limited number of such film slides of only a few scenes were produced. The way it was done then (with a high-quality film slide) is long outdated and such material was destroyed after the film was completed. Only a few of these film slides have circulated. It is very rare production material that is almost never offered. Because making the film slides was expensive, they were placed in a special sleeve to prevent damage. This lot contains such a beautiful, preserved original film slide. It concerns the beautiful scene where Lord Bommel is sleeping by the open hearth. The photos attached to this lot were taken with light behind the film slide. The offered copy also includes the protective sleeve, and the film slide is in excellent condition.
