The train was designed from late 1979 and built between 1983 and 1985. It was used for numerous technical tests until its withdrawal on 1 January 2000. The approved maximum speed of 350 km/h was higher than that of all later ICE trains and was exceeded during various demonstration and record attempts. With a top speed of 406.9 km/h, achieved during the ICE world record attempt on 1 May 1988, it was the fastest wheel-rail vehicle in the world until December 1989 and remains the world record holder for wheel-rail vehicles in Germany.
