Marc R Hanson Painting - "Sawhill #2" (2002

Marc R. Hanson (American, b. 1955). "Sawhill #2" oil on board, 2014. Signed at lower left and again with title and date on verso. A quiet stretch of water glides across the foreground of this contemplative Colorado landscape, its pale surface catching the cool light of an overcast day while the distant foothills rise in soft blue tones beyond a line of winter trees. In "Sawhill #2," Marc R. Hanson turns his attention to the Sawhill Ponds near Boulder, a wildlife preserve known for its reflective wetlands and sweeping views of the Front Range. The scene is spare and atmospheric, built from restrained color harmonies of gray, slate blue, and muted gold that evoke the stillness of late autumn or early winter. The composition unfolds in broad horizontal bands: calm water in the foreground, a strip of tawny grasses and bare cottonwoods along the shore, and the shadowed rise of the mountains beyond. Size: 10" W x 8" H (25.4 cm x 20.3 cm) Hanson handles the paint with economy and confidence, using loose, deliberate brushwork to suggest the shimmering movement of the pond and the textured slopes of the foothills. A slender vertical tree punctuates the center of the composition, providing a quiet counterpoint to the expansive horizontal rhythms of water and land. As a painter deeply attuned to the natural world, Hanson approaches the landscape as both subject and experience. His work often reflects a naturalist's eye for subtle atmospheric conditions and shifting light, and here that sensitivity is evident in the delicate transitions of tone across the mountains and sky. Rather than describing every detail, the painting captures an impression of place - the cool air, the still water, the distant weight of the mountains - allowing the viewer to inhabit the quiet moment the artist observed. "Sawhill #2" stands as a refined example of Hanson's landscape practice, where direct observation and painterly restraint combine to convey the quiet beauty of the American West. The modest scale and intimate handling invite close viewing, rewarding the eye with subtle variations of color and texture that mirror the understated poetry of the Boulder wetlands themselves. About the artist: "Having grown up in a military family, Marc's youth was spent on the move. He was born in Oxnard, California and spent some of his early school years there. But his geographical resume soon included Alaska, Florida, Arkansas, Nebraska, South Dakota and Norway. After his father's retirement from the Air Force, Marc's family settled in the small northern California community of Loomis. Marc began college as a biology major, but soon applied to and was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, majoring in illustration. After Art Center and a brief stint as a staff illustrator in Sacramento, California, Marc moved to Minnesota where he lived for 33 years while raising a family and pursuing his art. Marc has recently lived in Colorado and Mississippi before settling down on Tybee Island, GA. "I have pursued a career as a painter for many years now. Along the way my methods, materials and focus have evolved. A naturalist at heart, the landscape is the perfect vehicle for expressing the joy I have for the world that surrounds me. My real interest and challenge as a painter is how to best manipulate the core principles of painting into effective visual statements. I'm most successful when I'm able to communicate that joy to the viewers of my paintings." Marc teaches landscape painting workshops in many locations nationally. "I love working with other painters in their pursuit to better their craft. My goal is not to have them assimilate my style and technique, but to teach them how to more closely examine the subject and apply the principles that representational painters must follow to become effective visual communicators." He has shown his work in galleries and museums nationally and internationally since the early 1980's. He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.) He is a Master Signature Member of The Oil Painters of America (O.P.A.M.), having won an Award of Excellence at the O.P.A. National Exhibit in 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2011 Marc's painting 'Right or Left' was awarded Bronze Medal for Painting at the OPA National Exhibition in Coeur d'Alene, ID. Among his many awards, he's placed four times in The Pastel Journal's 'Pastel 100' competition." (source: artist's website) Item # 200888
