Marc L. Felix – Maniema: An Essay on the Distribution of...

An extremely rare and fundamental standard work within African art history is being offered: Maniema by the renowned expert Marc Leo Felix, published in 1989 (Munich, Fred Jahn). This substantial and richly illustrated masterpiece is the absolute authority on the mask and symbol traditions in the Maniema region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). An indispensable reference work for collectors, appraisers, and museums to scientifically determine and link objects to the complex tribal structures of Central Africa. This copy forms a perfect unity with other high-quality ethnographic publications in this and upcoming auctions. Bidders are advised also to view the remaining lots for a unique chance to build a specialized library in one go. Think here of cross-references with masterpieces from Oceanic and Asian art, such as: Oceanic Art – Anthony J.P. Meyer New Guinea Art (Vol. 1 & 2) – Marcia & John Friede Pacific Encounters – Steven Hooper Beyond the Java Sea – Paul Taylor & Lorraine Aragon (Abrams) This copy is in sublime, neat mint condition. Given the age of 37 years and the ink- and varnish-quality used at the time for the deep black cover, the exterior shows only the characteristic, slight craquelé inherent to this specific edition. The book is almost unopened. To absolutely safeguard the integrity of the spine and the delicate binding, the studio photos were strictly taken with an opening angle of less than 60 degrees. No creases, inside no discolorations, no dog-ears and completely free of signs of use or odors. Note for the bidder: In this auction series many high-quality ethnographic publications are offered, with a focus on Africa, Oceania, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. This is a rare, unique opportunity to build or significantly expand a specialized art-historical library. Safe shipping worldwide, exclusively high-quality packaging and Track & Trace. When purchasing multiple lots in the same auction, the seller applies a fair, manual adjustment to the shipping costs, according to the total volume and insured value.
