Manfred Linus Kreiner - John F

MANFRED LINUS KREINER (1926–2005) Title: John F. Kennedy & Jacqueline Kennedy — En route to the Capitol, morning of the inauguration, 1961 DESCRIPTION: Splendid photograph taken by photographer Manfred Linus Kreiner in Washington, D.C., on January 20, 1961, the morning of John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, which would that day become the 35th president of the United States. The image offers an exceptional view of the United States Capitol, while the presidential limousine carrying John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy heads toward the Capitol for the inauguration ceremony. At the center of the composition, the presidential car stands out amid the official procession. The numerous vehicles preceding and following the limousine belong to the Secret Service security arrangement, accompanying the future presidential couple on their way to the place where Kennedy would take the oath a few hours later. The photograph also captures the particularly cold conditions of that historic morning. The snow still visible along the sides of the avenue, as well as the marks left on the roadway, bear witness to the difficult weather conditions that marked this inauguration day. Through his exceptional framing, which provides both a monumental view of the Capitol, the movement of the presidential procession, and the unique atmosphere of Washington that morning, Manfred Kreiner captures a rare moment just before one of the most important political events in 20th-century American history. This photograph belongs to the The Kennedy Years corpus by Manfred Linus Kreiner, rediscovered from the original negatives kept in the photographer’s estate archives.
