Magnificent Vintage Torsade Coral Necklace with Gold Clasp, Italy c. 1985

Did you know that multi-strand necklaces, where the individual strands can be twisted together, are called torsades? The term is derived from the French torsadée and means "twisted". The special charm of such a torsade lies in its changeability: it can be worn classically with intertwined strands or loose and free-falling - creating a new, lively look time and time again. This necklace is made as a torsade of 16 strands and is made of natural red precious coral from the Mediterranean. Coral, from which precious jewellery has been made for centuries, has an impressive variety of colours. The spectrum ranges from white and delicate pink to the coveted salmon shade in light and dark nuances as well as the deep, powerful red also known as oxblood. Each coral species has its own characteristic play of colors. The corals in our necklace impress with their uniform, intense coloration in a warm orange-red. The strands are held together by a large clasp made of high-carat yellow gold, which provides an elegant, bright contrast to the play of colors of the coral. The necklace was created in Italy in the 1980s and is beautifully preserved. We found this magnificent piece here in Berlin.
