Vintage mid-century reading table / magazine holder – chrome, black faux leather (skai) and wood – 60s/70s A particularly stylish and multifunctional vintage reading table from the 60s/70s, in which almost everything that makes European mid-century design of this period so appealing comes together: a slender chromed tubular frame, warmly drawn wood, black faux leather, and a surprisingly practical construction. The piece combines a side table, magazine holder, and an extra shelf in one compact design. The rectangular top panel features a beautifully pronounced dark-brown wood grain, while beneath it there is a spacious black reading compartment for magazines, newspapers, or books. Right at the bottom there is also an open metal wire shelf for extra reading material or other items. The contrasting combination of warm wood, glossy chrome, and black faux leather gives the piece its distinctive 1960s look. Similar reading tables from this period were manufactured in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Western Europe with precisely this material mix. For example, from the 1960s there are documented Brabantia variations with chromed metal frames, wood- or rosewood-veneered tops, and leather reading holders. Without a factory mark I would not attribute this specimen to a specific manufacturer. Also in the broader mid-century furniture production, the combination of a wooden top with a slim metal frame and integrated reading storage was popular: the furniture remained visually light while gaining multiple functions. The top panel of this piece has a particularly beautiful, strongly striped wood figure reminiscent of palissander. Since no material or factory markings are visible, I describe it cautiously as wood/veneer with palisander-like grain. Features * Type: reading table / magazine holder / side table * Period: presumably 60s – early 70s * Style: Mid-Century Modern / vintage modernism * Slim metal tubular frame * Chrome finish * Rectangular wooden top with a pronounced dark wood grain * Spacious black reading compartment under the tabletop * Upholstery of reading compartment: black faux leather * Additional metal wire shelf underneath * Serves as both a side table and magazine holder * Nice combination of wood, black, and chrome * Compact yet striking design * Manufacturer not marked / unknown Condition Good authentic vintage condition with clear signs of use and age appropriate to the piece. The chromed frame shows localized scratches, dull spots, discoloration, and superficial oxidation/patina. These signs are clearly visible in the detail photos. The black reading compartment shows normal signs of use, including local surface wear. The wooden top also shows signs of use, including scratches, light wear, and damage along the edges and corners. These are clearly photographed and give the piece its authentic vintage character. A decorative and practical piece of furniture that fits well beside an armchair or sofa. Thanks to the combination of warm wood tones, chrome, and black, it blends nicely with both a 60s/70s interior and a modern setting with mid-century accents.
