MADELEINE GREEN (BRITISH 1848-1947) THE MODEL Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 91.5 x 61cm (36 x 24in.) Exhibited: Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, The Liverpool Red Cross autumn exhibition of modern art: the forty-fifth, 1915 (according to label to frame verso) Green studied at the RA schools between 1906-11 and established herself as one of the leading figurative artists of the pre-war period. She won a silver medal at the Paris Salon of 1923 and exhibited widely throughout Britain, as well as internationally in Paris, Venice, Melbourne and Adelaide. She spent most of her life living in West London, moving to Lincolnshire in 1940 and then settling with her sister in Norfolk in about 1942. The artist exhibited a painting titled, The Model at the Royal Academy’s Annual Exhibition, 1915 (no. 47). It received favourable notice, with one critic remarking on the painting’s delicate refinements and subtle quality. The colouring is of greys with a blue note in the skirt of the figure… the picture stands out among its more ordinary surroundings by its inherent distinction. The present painting is notable for the enigmatic nature of the composition, as well as for its overall feelings of simplicity and modernity.
