Lucie Rie (Austrian/British, 1902-1995), Beaker, 1957

Stoneware, running manganese glaze over white glaze revealed around the base, a sgraffito band incised with the inscription P.R. II II MDCCCCLVII, impressed LR seal H 11.8cm, D 7.9cm PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Kent Bonhams, Design and Contemporary Ceramics, 23 October 2024, lot 42 Collection of Lord and Lady Chorley, Stanmore, UK. Thence by descent to the previous owner. This beaker is believed to be from a special commission by Roger & Patricia Rigby in 1957 for a series of inscribed and dated beakers to be given to each volunteer member of the 'friends choir' who were to sing at their wedding. Roger Rigby was the 'keeper' of Ove Arup Group Engineering Group during the 1950s and 1960s and a close personal friend of the founder, Sir Ove Arup. Roger and Patricia, a potter, became some of the earliest and most dedicated collectors of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. CONDITION: Perfect condition with no damage or restoratio ceramics
