This lot includes two original publication boards of Pépito, the iconic creation of the legendary Italian comic artist Luciano Bottaro. Luciano Bottaro was born on November 16, 1931 in Rapallo (Italy) and passed away on November 25, 2006 at the age of 75. 1 ("La Cacachuette"): A beautiful and detailed original ink plate (37 x 26 cm), bottom-right numbered 56/8. Full of action, humor, and Bottaro's signature dynamic drawing style. Plate 2 (with accompanying color gouache): An original ink plate (29 x 20 cm, pencil numbered 14) including the unique accompanying color gouache on transparent sheet. This offers a rare glimpse into the production process of the strip. Both plates are in beautiful, authentic condition with pencil notes and publisher corrections. Luciano Bottaro (1931–2006) was an influential and prolific Italian comic artist and animator, who, together with colleagues such as Romano Scarpa and Giovan Battista Carpi, belonged to the legendary first generation of European Disney masters. His key career milestones, in brief: Early years and Breakthrough (1949–1950s): Bottaro was born in Italian Rapallo. He left his studies in accounting early to devote himself fully to comics. In 1949 he debuted in the youth magazine Lo Scolaro with the character Aroldo il bucaniere and created the humorous series Pon Pon. The Disney years: From 1952 he began illustrating stories around Donald Duck (Paperino), Scrooge McDuck, and Goofy for the Italian publisher Mondadori and La Domenica del Corriere. His style was characterized by dynamism, a somewhat angular and expressive line, and a delightful dose of wacky, surreal humor. Creation of Pépito (1951): In 1951 he created his best-known own creation: Pépito, a comic young pirate on the ship The Peanut who takes on the corrupt governor of the island Las Ananas. Although the series had a shorter run in Italy, Pépito grew into a huge international success, especially in France (where it ran for decades in magazines such as Pif Gadget) and the rest of Europe. Studios and the "School of Rapallo": In 1958 he, together with Carlo Chendi and Giorgio Rebuffi, founded the famous Bierrecì Studios. From this studio they created, among others, Re di Picche (Klaveren Koning) and produced work for the iconic Italian television advertising program Carosello. The artists around Bottaro were informally also called the "School of Rapallo." Recognition: His unique contributions to the world of comics are recognized worldwide. From later decades, his classic Disney works and own creations have been reprinted several times in renowned international collectors’ editions (such as the Disney Masters series from Fantagraphics).
